Every year, in honor of National Coaches’ Day, Jefferson’s Murfreesboro recognizes a coach who goes above and beyond for their athletes and their community. These coaches have made an impact on their players’ lives on and off the field and have been nominated by school and community members.

Congratulations to Rickey Field, our 2025 Jefferson’s Murfreesboro Teacher of the Year!

Mr. Field teaches Strength Conditioning and Wellness at Riverdale High School, where he also coaches track. He has been a teacher for more than 40 years.

We received an outpouring of submissions from Mr. Field’s students (past and present!), many of whom spoke of his long history of serving as a parental figure in times of crisis, loss, or uncertainty. As one nominator said, “He always gave me a place to be.” We can’t think of a better way to tell you what makes him an incredible teacher than by sharing directly from his students:

• “This man is a superhero. The love he has for his community and students, no matter the demographics or social status, has been the same for decades. He has housed and fed many children and community members in times of crisis. If there is a financial need for a child wanting to participate in a sport, Coach is going to make it happen!”
• “Coach Field saved my life. He sees the best in everyone and creates family.”
• “Coach Field is the reason I woke up and wanted to go to school. He will always be a big reason why I work as hard as I do. He taught me valuable life lessons and was always there when I needed him the most.”
• “There’s only one Ricky Field and I had the honor to be coached by him.”
  

Several students also shared one of their favorite quotes from having Mr. Field as their track coach: “This ain’t no walk in the park, you got to mooooove!!”
