Congratulations to Russell Coleman, our 2026 Jefferson’s North Kansas City Teacher of the Year!

Russell Coleman teaches World History and Psychology at Park Hill High School.

We can’t think of a better way to tell you what makes him an incredible teacher than by sharing directly from her nominators:

“Genuine care. In a world where a passion for teaching is sometimes hard to find, he continues to strive. Before working at Park Hill, I know he worked at a school system in Arizona with some kids who really struggled financially and economically. He was able to be a light and a vessel for these kids, some of whom were just happy to be there and engage because they knew Russell wanted to better their lives and help anyway he could. He would bring in snacks and treats, stuff out of his own pocket just to make an impact in these kids lives. Now at Park Hill, he has continued to try and be impactful for students, but taking a it a step further, outside of just teaching but for coaching as well, as an assistant I believe, but for the wrestling program there – a program I know made an imprint on Russell’s life. He is a great friend, a great soldier, a great coach, a great teacher, but above all else, a great human.”

Russell shared, “Being able to serve the community I live in has always been one of my top priorities when thinking about how I want to spend my time. Whether in the classroom as a teacher or on the mat as a wrestling coach, working in education has given me the opportunity to watch young people in our community grow into the best versions of themselves. Being part of that journey is what being a teacher truly means to me.”
